Marriage Registration in Thailand can be easy. Thailand has welcomed foreigners who wish to get married in the Kingdom. For the past years, there has been an increase of numbers in marriages between foreigners or a local in the city or in some provinces across Thailand. The Thai legal system has only authorized a male and female union until this very day and same-sex marriages has not been recognized yet in Thailand.

The process for the Thai marriage registration has change through time, due to the documents and requirements needed before registration. There is a specific document which is compulsory that the respective embassies of the foreign marrying party must obtain to move on with the process.

  • Affidavit of Freedom to Marry Thailand

Regardless of nationality, the foreigner must visit and make appointment with their respective embassies in order to obtain an affidavit stating one is free to marry, also for passport certification. The timeline with regards to process differs depending on nationality and also with documentations. It is required and needed to be prepared, to avoid delay on issuance of the affidavit.

Basic requirements needed for foreigners:

  • – Valid passport
  • Divorce/ Death document if applicable

This is for an individual who had a divorce or widowed, an original or certified copy of the divorce or death certificate should be presented.

Necessary documents to prepare for Thai nationals:

  • – Thai National Identification Card
  • Thai House Registration
  • – Change name/ surname certificates if applicable
  • – Divorce/ Death certificate if applicable
  • – Child birth certificate if applicable**

** if have dependents together at the time of marriage to be stated in the marriage addendum

Marriage registration process:

Upon issuance of embassy documents. These must be translated into Thai language by a certified translation office. Then submitted for legalization at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). Once released, the marriage will then be processed and registered at the district office. An officer validates that the marriage is legally binding. On the day of marriage, you will be issued your Thai Marriage Certificates. This will then be translated and legalized to be used overseas.
